内地的民间有一种传说，说是野地里有一种白兔，常在晚间出没，那是一种叫作“貔狐”的灵兽，一般人是抓不到的，假若抓到了一只，尽管向它索要东西，它皆能满足你。二十年前的一个月朗星稀的夜间，在一处荒郊野外，我就遇到过几只白兔。当时我停下车，从地上捡起一个土块，认真地砸过去，白兔并没有跑，还在原地玩耍着，仿佛等着让我重砸，再想起那位猎手弃恶从善的故事，我也不再管它是那种要啥给啥的“貔狐”，还是从某农家跑到野外消闲的家兔了，我跨上车，也一溜烟跑了。

或许是因为兔的柔弱，易于被我们人类猎食的缘故，因此某些常获怜悯之心的文人或素食的佛家弟子便附会出了“貔狐”的神奇传说，大约也是想让我们人类约束一下自己的手和口，对那柔弱的生灵多一些恻隐之心吧！以前经常出差，每逢过南阳市北郊，总会见到一些专卖兔子头的酒店，那时我便会竭力阻挡朋友们去吃，阻挡不过之时，对那端上桌的瞪着眼看人的兔子头，也绝不会下箸取食。

我们常爱把小孩子比作小白兔，把“淘气、聪明、可爱”等一切美丽的词汇都添加于其身上，也是因其太过柔弱温顺之故。现在的市场上有卖一种袖珍兔的，更加的小巧玲珑，更加的洁白无瑕，可为孩子买一只回去。兔是个素食主义者，不食荤腥，每天有几片树叶或一把青草就能打发，是极易养活的。那时节再给孩子讲那则《小兔子乖乖》的儿童故事，果真就有现身说法的例证了。
